TEACHING POINTS

-
The javelin lies along the palm of the hand.
-
The palm should be facing upwards from the crossover steps through the delivery.
Three ways of holding the javelin:
-
Gripping the cord / grip between the thumb and index finger (American Style).
-
Gripping the cord / grip between the thumb and middle finger (Finnish Style). The index finger can either be pointed towards the tail of the javelin or wrapped around the javelin.
-
Gripping the cord between the index and middle finger (Fork Style).
The students / athlete may develop slight variations of the above for comfort.

The pull
Emphasise the pull action as the javelin is pulled over and above the shoulder. With the javelin or ball in the throwing hand, the athlete draws the throwing arm straight back. The non throwing arm should be extended and pointing in the direction of the throw and the shoulders should turn back approximately 90 degrees. This position adopted is similar to the bowling position in cricket, serving in tennis or preparation position for doing as cartwheel in gymnastics. The throwing hand should be slightly above the throwing shoulder. From this position, the athlete throws the ball or javelin. Emphasis should be on “pulling” as the throwing elbow follows through at a level that is higher than the throwing shoulder. The javelin should be released at a point above the head.

|
The approach run |
Begin with walking into the throwing position (without the javelin).
Carry the javelin in a position slightly above ear level and over the throwing shoulder. The javelin should be in a position that is approximately parallel to the ground although this will vary slightly according to comfort.
